Is Recovered Solvent Really Clean? 4 Practical Tests for the Factory Floor

Recovered solvent quality control — ARMIN

You can assess recovered solvent quality on the factory floor without laboratory testing. Here are 4 simple tests.

Test 1: Visual Colour Check

Clean solvent is colourless or slightly yellow and transparent. Brown or cloudy appearance indicates contamination. Transfer to a glass container and hold to light.

Test 2: Odour Check

Clean solvent retains its characteristic odour. Burnt or plastic smell indicates degraded contaminants — run a second distillation cycle.

💡 'Clean' is relative: purity for pre-paint degreasing differs from solvent thinning.

Test 3: Evaporation Test

Drop a few drops on white paper. After full evaporation, no stain should remain. Oily or coloured staining means contaminants remain.

Test 4: Application Test

Trial the solvent at small scale for its intended use. Test on a small batch or sample part.

Conclusion

These four tests provide sufficient quality assurance for most applications.

✅ AR-series machines deliver 97–99% purity in laboratory tests.
