How to Store Solvent Safely in Your Factory: A Complete Guide for Waste and Recovered Solvent

Industrial solvent safe storage — ARMIN Makine

Purchasing a solvent recovery machine is only one step. Real safety and regulatory compliance depend on how solvents are stored in your facility. Improper storage means fire, explosion, environmental contamination and serious legal penalties.

Waste Solvent Storage Rules

Unprocessed waste solvent carries the highest risk. Use metal or approved HDPE drums — plastic containers are not suitable. Keep drum lids tightly closed and never store full drums horizontally. The storage area must be labelled 'Waste Solvent — Flammable' and kept on grounded metal shelving.

⚠️ Waste solvent storage areas must be at least 3 metres from heat sources and electrical panels.

Recovered Solvent Storage Rules

Clean solvent from the recovery machine must be stored in closed, labelled approved containers. Labels should show solvent type, recovery date and operator name. Storing clean and waste solvent in the same area creates both safety and quality contamination risks — separate areas are mandatory.

Ventilation and Fire Prevention

Solvent storage areas require continuous ventilation and ATEX-compliant (non-sparking) lighting and electrical equipment. Since solvent vapour can accumulate, an LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) detector is recommended. Keep an appropriate dry powder fire extinguisher nearby — water cannot extinguish solvent fires.

Legal Requirements

Regulations in most countries require waste solvent to be handed over to licensed disposal companies. Facilities using solvent recovery machines greatly reduce this obligation — but residual waste still needs to be recorded.

✅ Good news: Facilities using recovery machines reduce waste solvent by 80–90%, significantly lowering legal burden.

Conclusion

Proper storage protects your investment and keeps your workers safe. Ventilation, labelling and keeping away from ignition sources — these three rules are non-negotiable standards.
