A solvent recovery machine significantly reduces solvent exposure — but operators must use correct protective equipment and follow procedures during loading, filling and emptying operations.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Gloves: Nitrile gloves (min 0.1mm) — latex is permeable, unsuitable
- Goggles: Sealed chemical goggles — regular glasses are not sufficient
- Respiratory: Half-mask with organic vapour cartridge for short-duration tasks
- Apron: Chemical-resistant apron
- Footwear: Closed-toe, antistatic
What to Do on Solvent Contact?
Skin contact: Wash immediately with plenty of water. Eye contact: Rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes, medical attention mandatory. Inhalation: Move person to fresh air immediately, call ambulance if breathing is difficult.
⚠️ Never use water on solvent fires — use dry chemical powder or CO₂ extinguisher.
Health Effects
Short-term high exposure: dizziness, nausea, confusion. Chronic low-level exposure: chronic headaches, memory issues, liver burden. Adequate ventilation and PPE are therefore mandatory, not optional.
Operator Training
For every new operator: SDS (Safety Data Sheet) reading requirement, PPE use practice, emergency procedure knowledge. Annual refresher training recommended.
